LINEA – an exceptional quality and interior decoration materials store and office in Vilnius.
The building is designed in the historical Žvėrynas district near the center of Vilnius. It is a protected historical area of a small villa buildings context with a lot of greenery. That is what became the main challenge – to fulfill the strict urban and architectural requirements of the territory and to design a modern, memorable and open to everyone object that invites visitors at the same time.
The structure of the building seeks to adapt to the surrounding small scale buildings. The volume is divided into two smaller volumes. They intersect and slide in relation to each other. The barely perceptible irregularity of the volumes not only responds to the shape of the plot, but also creates a sense of movement. This is being done bearing in mind that there are also many chaotic, irregular old wooden and brick buildings around. The volumetric composition is oriented with narrow facades to the main street of the district. In order to integrate into small-scale urban development, the volume is not only divided, but also interprets the typology of two-storey villas with its silhouette.
The design idea of the building was inspired by the urban environment and the name of the company (Linea – in Latin means – “line”). The volume composition of the building develops from a small, changing, building character, and the name of the company influenced the expression and materiality of the building. Ceramic panels are used to decorate the facades and roof of the building. The individual volumetric ceramic strips – lines, in front of the glass facade create a feeling of grace, lightness and openness. The main aim – to achieve a sense of integrity. Therefore, the selected ceramic wall decor continuously cover the roof slopes as well, and the detail of the roof ridge emphasizes that continuity and the idea of volume integrity.
The three storey building is compact – the first and second floors are the shop’s exhibition spaces, third, attic floor is reserved for office space. An elevator provides access for people with disabilities to the commercial areas on the second floor. Facade and roof decoration made from MOEDING ceramic tiles and ceramic rectangular individual elements – moldings. In addition to their aesthetic function, they protect the premises from overheating. The falling shadow graphics from them become an integral part of the interior. Individually designed details were used for the facade system.
